Description

REPORTS TO:   Director of Nursing/Building Principal

 

JOB GOAL:  Provides health services under the direction of a licensed nurse in a school setting. Provides basic first aid and delegated nursing services for patient safety, comfort, personal hygiene, basic mental health, and protection. 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Assists the Director of Health Services, school health committees, and administrators in developing school health programs.
  2. Observe students regularly to detect health needs.
  3. Renders basic first aid and emergency care to students for illnesses, injuries, and life-threatening situations. 
  4. Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.
  5. Assumes authority for caring for students or staff members who have suffered an injury or emergency illness.
  6. Assists in administering scheduled and as-needed medications.
  7. Participates in in-service training programs.
  8. Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
  9. Conducts school health service, including immunization verifications, vision screening, health assessments, and physical examinations.
  10. Assumes responsibility for any medications in the school provided by parents for students in accordance with Board policy.
  11. Teaches principles of health promotion and disease prevention as needed or requested.
  12. Performs specialized procedures as trained and delegated by the Director of Health Services, including diabetic glucose monitoring, carbohydrate counting, insulin dosage calculation, small-volume nebulizer treatment, urinary catheterization, etc. 
  13. Serves as the school-based health and safety designee; reports unsafe conditions to site administration. 
  14. Assists with health office infection control practices; maintains cleanliness, supplies, and equipment of sick/well rooms. 
  15. Stocks and reorders First Aid supplies (i.e., band-aids, tongue depressors, etc.); assist in maintaining First Aid kit/supplies, trauma kit, and evacuation cart/system under the direction of the Director of Health Services.
  16. Maintains confidentiality of student medical records and health information.
  17. Reviews and records students’ medical and health information in the student information system and electronic medical records database.
  18. Conforms to safety standards, as prescribed.
  19. Performs other tasks related to the position, as assigned. 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Nine-month year.  Salary and work year to be established by the Board.


EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.
