POSITION TITLE: High School Teacher - Physical Education

REPORTS TO:        Building Principal

LOCATION:           High School



QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Education,  or related field
  • Valid Missouri teaching certificate appropriate for high school Physical Education
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate

 

PURPOSE STATEMENT

The High School Physical Education Teacher provides engaging, standards-based instruction that promotes physical fitness, wellness, teamwork, and lifelong healthy habits. This position fosters a safe and structured learning environment where students develop physical skills, personal responsibility, and knowledge of health and fitness concepts aligned with district curriculum and Missouri Learning Standards.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Instruction and Curriculum

  • Plan and deliver standards-based physical education instruction aligned with district curriculum and Missouri Learning Standards
  • Teach skills related to fitness, movement, sportsmanship, and personal wellness
  • Facilitate individual and team activities that promote physical development and healthy lifestyles
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and physical abilities
  • Integrate technology and cross-curricular strategies to enhance instruction when appropriate

Classroom Environment and Student Support

  • Maintain a safe, structured, and positive gymnasium and outdoor learning environment
  • Promote teamwork, respect, and responsible participation in physical activities
  • Ensure proper safety procedures and supervision during physical activities and equipment use
  • Support students’ confidence, goal-setting, and social-emotional development


Assessment and Communication

  • Assess student progress in physical skills, participation, and knowledge of wellness concepts
  • Maintain accurate records and provide timely feedback to students and families
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and expectations
  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences and student support meetings

Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with staff, coaches, and interdisciplinary teams
  • Participate in professional development related to physical education and student wellness
  • Support school improvement initiatives and data-driven decision-making
  • Follow district policies, safety guidelines, and professional standards

 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Abide by state statutes, school board policies and regulations.
  • Attend meetings as assigned.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
  • Remain current on instructional practices in education.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Building Principal

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Ability to stand, move, and demonstrate physical activities for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and organize athletic equipment or instructional materials
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions
  • Participation in school events or meetings outside of regular hours as needed

 

ATTENDANCE

  • Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position

 

FLSA Status

Exempt

 

Salary Grade

Certified

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  9 month contract year

Annual contract for school year and Extended School Year, if applicable, in accordance with the provisions of  Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified staff.

Background clearance required; the results of which must be satisfactory to the District.

 

EVALUATION: 

Performance will be evaluated by the Building Principal in accordance with district policies and teacher evaluation procedures.
