POSITION TITLE: High School Teacher - Special Education
REPORTS TO: Building Principal/Director of Special Services
LOCATION: High School
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field
- Valid Missouri teaching certificate in Special Education appropriate for high school grade levels
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate
PURPOSE STATEMENT
The High School Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction that supports the academic, behavioral, functional, and transition needs of students with disabilities. This position develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) aligned with district curriculum and Missouri Learning Standards while preparing students for post-secondary education, employment, and independent living. The High School Special Education Teacher collaborates with general education teachers, families, and community agencies to promote student achievement and successful transition outcomes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction and Curriculum
- Develop and implement standards-based instruction aligned with district curriculum and Missouri Learning Standards
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Provide specialized instruction in academic, behavioral, and functional skill areas
- Support credit attainment and graduation requirements
- Incorporate transition goals and career readiness skills into instruction
- Monitor student progress and adjust instruction based on data and IEP goals
Classroom Environment and Student Support
- Create and maintain a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment
- Implement behavior intervention plans and positive behavior supports
- Promote student independence, self-advocacy, and transition readiness
- Collaborate with related service providers to ensure appropriate accommodations and modifications
Assessment and Communication
- Conduct ongoing progress monitoring and maintain accurate IEP documentation
- Develop and implement transition plans in compliance with state and federal regulations
- Maintain accurate student records in compliance with state and federal regulations
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and programming
- Participate in IEP meetings, eligibility meetings, and parent-teacher conferences
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and community partners to support student success
Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with grade-level teams, special education staff, and school personnel
- Participate in professional development and school improvement initiatives
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
- Abide by state statutes, school board policies and regulations.
- Attend meetings as assigned.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
- Remain current on instructional practices in education.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Building Principal

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 9 month contract year
Annual contract for school year and Extended School Year, if applicable, in accordance with the provisions of Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified staff.
Background clearance required; the results of which must be satisfactory to the District.
EVALUATION:
Performance will be evaluated by the Building Principal in accordance with district policies and teacher evaluation procedures.
